In re-imagining a science-fiction museum, our team sought to capture the mystery and adventure that captivates audiences of the genre. To heighten the effect of a "living" synthetic architecture, the formal expression is seamlessly structural as well as a legible programmatic indicator.

The most indicative of the living-synthetic, or "synthetica," is that half of the "spikes" are made of rubber-encased metal that droop and perk according to outside temperature. The other half, located in the more public realm, is concrete and used to strategically hide most of the drama that takes place in the sub-surface realm. Yet, the same formal language is used to become public space with integrated, terrace-like seating elements.

Lessons

"Parametric design through Generative Components produces unique results. Components and systems have a closer relationship than I previously thought. There is a fluidity that can emerge out of a system. Parameters based on the X,Y,and Z coordinates (and setting attractor points in space) allowed us to visualize the results, which revealed some exciting possibilities."
