America's farming industry has reached a historic, critical juncture: whereas the majority of the past century has produced a diverse range of flourishing agricultural industries, the next century will see that agriculture must become ever more competitive to stay relevant and valued as a productive industry.
Current options of either hyper-industrializing or converting farmland to developed land lack sustainable foresight and have detrimental planning and ecological effects. Moreover, regional issues of water management brought forth by both aging infrastructure and storm events have become increasingly threatening for farming. As such, the Hydroway is a proposal for a regional infrastructure that leverages these threats for economic and ecologic opportunity at the synthesis of farmland preservation and water systems management.

"Teamwork is key. Michael and Xiaoye were great communicators and we really fused our talents to make sense out of our research and direction (from our professor). We put in the hard work with an understanding of each of our unique strengths. Ellen is an amazing professor who provided incredibly clear guidance. "
